A labiaplasty is a simple surgery that removes excess tissue from the labia. It’s also known as a Labioplasty, Labial Reduction Surgery, Labia Reduction Surgery, or Vulvar Surgery. This procedure helps women eliminate the feelings of self-consciousness and discomfort caused by elongated or asymmetrical vaginal lips. Aging and childbirth can cause unwanted changes in this intimate and sensitive area. Other women endure the physical and emotional distress of enlarged labia, or labial hypertrophy, as a result of genetics. The compassionate and caring plastic surgeons at Prime Plastic Surgery offer this vaginal rejuvenation procedure to help women in the San Diego area and beyond feel their best. Contact one of our offices to schedule a consultation for more information on this procedure. Prime Plastic Surgery has offices in La Mesa and La Jolla, and you can reach us directly by calling (858) 285-4667.
The labia are the folds of tissue around that protect the reproductive and urinary systems. There are two sets of labia, the the labia majora (outer lips) and the labia minora (inner lips). Labia perform the essential function of guarding the delicate tissues of the clitoris, the urinary orifice, and the vagina. There’s no such thing as “normal” labia: since every woman’s body is unique, so is the size and shape of the labia. The labia minora in particular are often asymetrical and can vary in length, and it’s perfectly natural that they protrude slightly from the labia majora. However, in certain cases, this can interfere with everyday activities. Over-developed labia can be a source of irritation, cause hygiene issues, and result in pain during intimacy.
Labial hypertrophy can be caused by various factors, but a labiaplasty offers women a permanent way to eliminate discomfort, attain a desired aesthetic, and improve confidence.
A labiaplasty is a transformative treatment that allows women to live confidently and comfortably. Elongated labia often become pinched or twisted, and become irritated by friction when sitting, cycling, running, sex, or wearing tight clothing or lingerie. They can also prevent women from enjoying swimwear for fear of becoming exposed. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, nearly 10,000 labiaplasties are performed every year. And, studies have found that the procedure has a satisfaction rate of over 90%. With that many women enjoying their results, there’s no reason to continue living with labia that limit your ability to enjoy everything life has to offer. After a labiaplasty, women have:
- Added physical comfort and heightened self-confidence in the bedroom
- Better sexual pleasure and increased sensitivity
- Decreased chances of developing infections
- Ability to wear tight clothing, swimsuits, and a wider range of lingerie
Labiaplasty has given many women the opportunity to prevail over pain and regain a sense of comfort and confidence. The medical staff at Prime Plastic Surgery will be able to recommend labiaplasty for your unique case following an examination and discussion at your personal consultation. Ideal patients for a labiaplasty are:
- Healthy individuals over the age of 18
- Concerned about the physical discomfort caused by an enlarged labia
- Experiencing pain when sitting, working out, or during intimacy
- Looking to change their intimate aesthetics
- Self-conscious about the size of the labia
- Do not have bladder or a vaginal infection at the time of surgery

- Arrange to have someone pick you up from our surgical facility.
- Take at least a week off from work to recover.
- Follow instructions on fasting before surgery
Prime Plastic Surgery takes time to explain each step in the surgical process to ensure our patients feel comfortable and prepared. We’ve created a helpful surgery safety guide filled with more tips on what to expect.
Labiaplasty is a quick procedure and typically only takes about an hour. You’ll be administered either general anesthesia or IV sedation to make sure you are comfortable. The approach that your surgeon takes to reduce your labia will depend on your anatomy, and the treatment plan designed to address your specific concerns.
This method removes extra skin from along the outer edge of the enlarged labia. This eliminates skin that protrudes from the labia majora and can create a more symmetrical appearance. After this skin is removed from the labia, the edges are sutured together. Women concerned about darker colored tissue along the edges of their labia appreciate how this approach eliminates the overly pigmented tissue, and creates more evenly colored labia.
For this technique, our medical staff will remove a V-shaped “wedge” piece of the labia minora. The incised area will then be sutured together. Any scarring is concealed in the folds of the labia, and the natural contours, coloration, and texture of the labia’s edges are preserved.
Labiaplasty is an outpatient procedure, so you’ll be able to return home shortly after your procedure ends. You’ll need to spend the next 3 days in bed, resting on your back with a pillow under your buttocks to elevate the treatment area and help with swelling. Please apply a padded icepack to the area regularly to help with bruising and swelling, being careful not to apply ice directly to your incisions. You’ll have a prescription for pain medication to get you through the first few days of your recovery. This medication, along with the lingering effects of the anesthesia will make you unable to drive, so please stay home and focus on rest.
Please use unscented baby wipes to gently pat, rather than wipe, the area dry after using the bathroom. You’ll be able to shower the third day after your surgery, but don’t be alarmed if you notice a red tint to the water after washing: this is just trace amounts of dried blood from your healing incisions. It’s essential to keep the area clean and dry at all times. Refrain from using ointments or scar creams immediately after your surgery, as they may cause irritation or an adverse reaction. You’ll be placed on a course of antibiotics to avoid the risk of infection. Since this often causes yeast infections, you’ll also be given a prescription for Diflucan to avoid any further discomfort.
As You Heal
It’s normal for the area to be itchy and swollen for the first few weeks after surgery. We recommend waiting to take a look – the area will be bumpy and discolored, and it will take about 6 weeks before the swelling subsides.
Avoid pools, jacuzzis, ocean water, tampons, strenuous activity and sexual intercourse for the next 6 weeks.
Full recovery from a labiaplasty takes about 6-8 weeks. In the meantime, we’re here for you!
You’ll return for regularly scheduled follow-up appointments so that we can monitor your progress, and we encourage patients to call the office with any questions or concerns as they heal.
Corresponding & Complementary Procedures
Prime Plastic Surgery is pleased to also offer women a non-surgical vaginal rejuvenation option. At your consultation, we can discuss the benefits of Ultra Femme 360 Vaginal Rejuvenation. This painless, minimally invasive treatment utilizes radiofrequency energy to tighten vaginal tissue, increase sensitivity, and reduce the size of the labia.
