Nearly every woman can remember the first time she looked in the mirror and noticed wrinkles around her eyes, horizontal lines on her forehead, or deep creases between her nose and mouth. Although facial volume loss isn’t emphasized as much as wrinkles, it is another unfortunate consequence of aging that can make you look years older than you are.Luckily, there’s a treatment that can restore youthful plumpness to your cheeks without surgery, pain, or downtime.* Juvéderm Voluma XC is the first and only FDA-approved injectable filler that gives your skin just enough fullness to add beautiful contours to your face and shave years off your appearance.*
What is Juvéderm Voluma XC?
As you age, your cheeks flatten and your skin may begin to sag. This is what experts call “age-related mid-facial volume loss.” Not only does a loss of facial volume make your cheeks appear sunken, but it can also exaggerate the look of fine lines and wrinkles. This is due to the natural breakdown of hyaluronic acid – the substance gives your skin a firm, youthful look.* That’s where Juvéderm Voluma XC comes in.
Juvederm Voluma® XC is the first and only hyaluronic gel filler approved by the Food and Drug Administration to treat facial aging in the face. The fact that it works instantly to replenish volume, lift the cheek area and lasts up to 2 years, puts Voluma in a class of it’s own. Treatments are designed to smooth moderate to severe wrinkles and folds and enhance volume lost over time due to aging and sun exposure. Treatment with Voluma is a wonderful way to enhance the overall natural shape of your face, giving your face a softer and more youthful look.
Juvederm® Voluma XC is a dermal filler injectable that improves the loss of facial volume primarily in the cheek area. This non-surgical treatment can also sometimes be used to fill hollows in the face and subtly lift the mid-face.
It is not appropriate for fine lines and wrinkles. Juvederm® Voluma is injected deeper into the tissue than Juvederm®, which allows it to support the skin’s structure.
A key advantage to Juvederm® Voluma is that the results can last up to two years, and you will see the results immediately.
Depending upon your goals and concerns, Dr. Singer might suggest the use of more than one facial filler to target different issues and areas.
See Restylane® and Juvederm® for more information on these fillers. For wrinkles resulting from muscle activity, Botox or Dysport® are the best options. Some patients also opt for Juvederm® Voluma injections for further freshening after a facelift if the lower face has developed mild recurrent sagging, causing excess skin around the jowls along with a flattening of the cheeks.
Juvederm® Voluma is a modified hyaluronic acid filler. Since hyaluronic acid is already present in the body, no allergy testing is necessary.
Who Needs Juvederm® Voluma?
If you have lost volume in the cheek area or have sagging or hollowed areas of the face, Juvederm® Voluma might be a good option for you. This formula is effective on both men and women and provides a natural look that is not obvious.
The Juvederm® Voluma Procedure
Juvederm® Voluma XC contains Lidocaine to reduce your discomfort, and Dr. Singer applies a topical numbing cream as well. It is injected under the skin with a small needle and works instantly to temporarily reverse the signs of aging. Your session will only take 15-30 minutes, and you can go home immediately.
Juvederm® and all injectable procedures are administered by Dr. Robert Singer, M.D.
What can I expect from a Juvéderm Voluma XC treatment?
If you’ve ever seen a celebrity with puffy, swollen cheeks, you know what can happen when a provider gets needle happy and over-injects his or her patient. At Prime Med Spa, we listen to your goals and expectations before anything else to make sure you leave our office with the natural-looking, beautiful results you want.
During your treatment, Juvéderm Voluma XC will be injected in tiny amounts in the areas you wish to add fullness. We’ll then gently massage the treatment area to ensure the gel is evenly distributed. Finally, an ice pack will be applied to your face for a few moments to minimize swelling and reduce pain.*
Recovery from Juvederm® Voluma Injections
Juvederm Voluma ®XC results are immediate and very natural looking, so typically you may return to work or social activities immediately. However, sometimes transient side effects occur, in particular, bruising and mild swelling may develop by the next day, so you do need to consider this in your planning. This is especially true if you have never been treated before or if you are taking things which might increase your risk or the severity of bruising like baby aspirin, blood thinners, fish oil, etc.
Some patients experience minor redness, itching, swelling, and bruising after Juvederm® Voluma injections. These symptoms usually only last a few days. If you feel small, invisible lumps at the injection sites, there is no need to worry. These will also resolve within a few days.
Your Juvederm® Voluma Consultation
Dr. Singer will listen carefully to your concerns about the aging process. He will then examine your face thoroughly to determine the best course of action to provide you with the look you want.
His recommendations may include more than one type of dermal filler or even surgery, in some cases. The final choice, of course, is yours. Dr. Singer’s goal is to give you all the information you need to make an informed decision about your procedure(s).
Frequently Asked Questions
We lose some of the skin’s “building blocks” such as elastin, collagen, and fat as we age which causes the skin to become lax and sag causing fine lines and wrinkles. Different fillers with different characteristics are carefully injected into various layers of the skin in different areas to reverse those changes.
If a member of my family was going to have a dermal filler, it would be injected by a Board-Certified Plastic Surgeon, ideally a member of The Aesthetic Society. Dr. Singer does all of the injections of fillers and Dysport® or Botox® in his office. He does not delegate that to anyone with lesser training.
After careful evaluation by Dr. Singer and development of an individual plan, a topical anesthetic cream is applied and cold packs. This maximizes comfort. The injections are performed meticulously. The entire treatment generally takes around 30-45 minutes.
One of the biggest advantages of Juvéderm Voluma XC is that you’ll see beautiful results after your first treatment.* Depending on your goals, we may recommend a touch-up session or two. When treated again after two years, you won’t need as much product to achieve your desired results.*
Everyone’s pain threshold is different. However, in the Juvéderm Voluma XC clinical study, patients reported their pain level as a 3 on a scale where 0 is no pain at all and 10 is the worst pain imaginable.* The Juvéderm Voluma XC gel contains lidocaine to reduce injection site pain, and you can ask us for a topical numbing gel to further reduce discomfort.
Side effects associated with Juvéderm Voluma XC are rare.* If anything, patients experience temporary swelling, redness, and tenderness at the injection site.* Avoiding strenuous exercise, exposure to the sun, and alcoholic beverages for 24 hours after your injections will reduce the chance of post-treatment discomfort.
Certainly. At Singer Surgical Centre, we recommend a combination approach to help patients improve their individual aesthetic concerns. It is perfectly safe to mix and match dermal fillers in conjunction with Dysport® or Botox®. The combined procedures are often referred to as a “liquid facelift”.
It is a non-surgical facial rejuvenation technique that uses a combination of Dysport® or Botox® and dermal fillers to improve the wrinkles and rejuvenate the lost volume in the face. While it can improve the appearance, it does not produce the same result as a facelift.
Dermal fillers and Dysport® or Botox® are all injectable treatments that are used to reduce the appearance of wrinkles. They work in different ways. Fillers use a gel ingredient to physically fill in wrinkles and elevate them from below the skin’s surface which improves the appearance. Dysport® or Botox® uses a purified form of botulinum toxin to temporarily reduce the muscles that cause dynamic wrinkles. When used appropriately, Dysport® or Botox® and dermal fillers can create significantly improved outcomes and are often used in combination to produce better cosmetic results.
Hyaluronic acid fillers can be reversed by dissolving them with hyaluronidase.
It varies depending on the filler and location of the injection, but typically most fillers last 6-9 months. Some of the fillers like Voluma can last up to two years. Patients do respond individually to fillers as their body breaks down the fillers which occurs faster in some people than in others.
Potential side effects include tenderness, swelling, pinkness, rare lumpiness or contour irregularities, temporary numbness, mild bruising, discomfort, infection or very rare allergic reaction and visual disturbance. Today’s dermal fillers have significantly improved since the first generation of collagen injections. Injection techniques have been modified and coupled with use of micro cannulas (blunt needles) and improved product safety. Significant side effects are extremely uncommon. These risks are higher when the treatment is performed in a non-sterile environment such as beauty clinics, salons, or in-home environments by inexperienced or underqualified individuals.
Allergies to hyaluronics have been described, but are very rare.
Dermal injection fillers can cause discomfort. Using a combination of numbing cream and ice makes it much more comfortable. Most of the dermal fillers that are injected at the Singer Surgical Centre include a local anesthetic.
Most patients do not have any downtime following filler injections and they return to normal activities and work right after treatment. In the patients who do experience some swelling, redness or bruising, it generally only lasts a couple of days and can usually be covered with makeup.
Women who are pregnant or patients with a compromised immune system should not have a dermal injection or if you are allergic to any ingredient in the filler, have a skin infection or inflammation near the area of potential injection.
